Astaxanthin is fat-soluble and unusually shaped — long enough to span a cell membrane rather than sit on one side of it. That is why researchers keep returning to it.

  • bolt

    Cellular energy

Astaxanthin concentrates in the mitochondrial membrane — the part of the cell that produces energy, and the part under the heaviest oxidative load.

  • wb_sunny

    Skin resilience

Studied for its role in supporting the skin’s own defences against oxidative stress from UV exposure and pollution.

  • visibility

    Eyes & focus

One of the few carotenoids able to reach the retina, where it sits alongside lutein and zeaxanthin.

  • directions_run

    Training recovery

A long-standing favourite of endurance athletes for supporting recovery from exercise-induced oxidative stress.

    WHERE IT COMES FROM

Grown under stress, not made in a reactor .

Haematococcus pluvialis is a freshwater microalga. Starve it of nutrients and flood it with light and it does something remarkable: it floods itself with astaxanthin as a chemical sunshade, turning from green to deep blood red.

That red biomass is what we harvest. The astaxanthin is separated using supercritical CO₂ — no chemical solvents — and suspended in oil so it is ready to absorb.

Most astaxanthin on the market is not this. Synthetic astaxanthin is built from petrochemical feedstock, is stereochemically different from the algal form, and is produced for salmon farming rather than for people.

    • 1. Take it with your biggest meal

Astaxanthin is fat-soluble. Taken on an empty stomach you absorb a fraction of it. Taken alongside a meal containing fat, absorption improves substantially.

    • 2. Same time, every day

Carotenoids build up in tissue gradually rather than acting dose-by-dose. Consistency matters far more than timing — morning or evening is a matter of habit.

    • 3. Give it 4 to 8 weeks

Plasma levels rise within days, but tissue saturation takes longer. This is not a supplement that announces itself on day two, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

What the research actually looks at

Astaxanthin is one of the more heavily studied carotenoids, but the evidence base is uneven — strong in some areas, early in others. Here is an honest map of it.

      Skin and photo-oxidative stress

The most developed area of astaxanthin research. Human trials have examined oral astaxanthin’s effect on skin moisture, elasticity and the skin’s response to UV exposure, generally at doses between 4mg and 12mg daily over 8 to 16 weeks.

Astaxanthin is not a sunscreen and does not replace one.

      Eye comfort and visual fatigue

Astaxanthin crosses the blood-retinal barrier, which most antioxidants cannot. Research has focused largely on eye strain and accommodation in people doing sustained close work — an area with promising but comparatively small trials.

      Exercise and recovery

Interest here comes from astaxanthin’s behaviour in the mitochondrial membrane. Studies have looked at markers of exercise-induced oxidative stress and muscle damage in trained athletes. Findings are mixed and the trials are typically small.

      Oxidative stress and cellular ageing

Much of the excitement around astaxanthin comes from in vitro antioxidant assays, where it performs extremely well against singlet oxygen. Those are laboratory measurements, not health outcomes, and we think it is worth being clear about the difference.

      Button label

Not all astaxanthin is the same molecule .

The word on the label tells you almost nothing. What matters is the source, the dose and whether anyone independent has checked.

      FREQUENTLY ASKED

      Questions worth asking

A red-orange carotenoid produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is what gives salmon, trout, krill and flamingos their colour — they get it by eating the algae, or by eating something that ate the algae. Humans cannot synthesise it, so it has to come from diet or supplementation.

Three things: dose, source and proof. Ours is 12mg of natural algal astaxanthin per softgel, not 4mg. It comes from H. pluvialis rather than petrochemical synthesis. And every batch is tested by an independent laboratory, with the certificate of analysis published rather than merely promised.

With whichever meal contains the most fat, at whatever time of day you will remember. Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so taking it with food meaningfully improves absorption. There is no evidence that morning or evening dosing matters.

Plan on four to eight weeks of daily use. Astaxanthin accumulates in tissue gradually. If a brand promises visible results in a week, be sceptical.

Astaxanthin has a good safety record at supplemental doses and is generally well tolerated. That said, it is not a medicine and we are not clinicians. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescription medication — particularly blood-pressure or anticoagulant medication — or managing a health condition, speak to your doctor before starting.

The astaxanthin itself is algal and entirely plant-based. Check the current product page for the softgel shell specification, as this is the component that determines the vegan status of the finished capsule.

No. That effect is associated with very high intakes of beta-carotene, a different carotenoid, at far larger doses. Astaxanthin at 12mg daily does not do this.
