Product & dosing

Daily use
01 — Product & dosing

A red-orange carotenoid produced by the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis. It is what makes salmon, trout, krill and flamingos pink — they get it by eating the algae, or by eating something that ate the algae. Humans cannot synthesise it, so it has to come from diet or supplementation.

01 — Product & dosing

Its molecule spans the full width of the cell membrane rather than sitting at one end of it, so it is active in both the water-facing and fat-facing sides. That structural difference is the reason it is studied separately from beta-carotene and lutein rather than lumped in with them.

01 — Product & dosing

One softgel a day. That is 12mg of natural algal astaxanthin — the dose most human research is built around, rather than the 4mg token dose common on the shelf.

01 — Product & dosing

With whichever meal contains the most fat, at whatever time of day you will actually remember. Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so food meaningfully improves absorption. There is no good evidence that morning or evening dosing matters.

01 — Product & dosing

You can, but you will absorb less of it. A meal containing some fat is the simplest way to get full value out of the dose you paid for.

01 — Product & dosing

Not much. Astaxanthin accumulates in tissue over weeks rather than acting dose-by-dose, so one missed day is noise. Do not double up the next day to compensate — just carry on.

01 — Product & dosing

Stay on one softgel daily unless a clinician has told you otherwise. More is not better here, and 12mg already sits at the upper end of what is typically studied.

01 — Product & dosing

Plan on four to eight weeks of daily use, and judge it at 90 days. Astaxanthin builds up gradually. If a brand promises visible results in a week, be sceptical — that is the claim, not the science.

Get Zela is a food supplement for adults, not a medicine, and we are not clinicians. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, taking prescription medication — particularly anticoagulant or blood-pressure medication — or managing a health condition, speak to your doctor before starting.

01 — Product & dosing

Generally yes. It is commonly taken with omega-3, vitamin D and other fat-soluble nutrients, and taking them together with a meal is convenient. If your multivitamin already contains astaxanthin, add up the combined total first.

01 — Product & dosing

No. That effect is associated with very large intakes of beta-carotene, a different carotenoid, at far higher doses. Astaxanthin at 12mg daily does not do this.

01 — Product & dosing

Somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, with the cap closed. No refrigeration needed. Light and heat are what degrade carotenoids, which is also why the softgel is opaque.
